![]() Since then I've purchased every single NBA 2K annual release - in the early years, at 9am on release day - through multiple consoles. NBA 2K blew me away with realism, superior graphics, and (at the time) revolutionary post play. Up until that point, I had played NBA Live religiously, but within 30 minutes of setting up the Dreamcast and popping in the original 2K (with Allen Iverson on the cover), I was sold. Some 17 years ago, on 9/9/99, I ditched my last high school class of the day and drove to the Montebello mall near my Southern Cali hometown and purchased a Sega Dreamcast, along with two games: Soul Caliber and NBA 2K. ![]() I'm old enough to remember when NBA 2K was for the niche market. I'm old enough to remember NBA 2K before it was the "it" sports game the online cultural phenomenon that spawns jokes and memes the all-but-official NBA product. Another reason is that the game has no competition, and without competition we can only compare the game to previous 2K games. Chief among them is the fact that this game is critic-proof: the NBA 2K series is the most popular sports game series in video games today, and arguably of all time, and it's going to sell millions no matter what anyone says. ![]() It's hard to review NBA 2K17 for a myriad of reasons.
